I thought long and hard before adding a donate button to this blog, and finally came to the decision to do so. I very much think of this donate button as a "tip jar," a place where people who appreciate what I'm doing here on this blog, and have a bit of money to spare, can throw a few dollars into my tip jar.
I spend a lot of time and effort on this blog, and in the last several years it's become very close to my heart. I choose not to host any advertising on this blog, because I feel that it would detract from the overall feel and atmosphere (if you believe a blog can have atmosphere), but that means that I don't make money in any way for the work I do here. Thus, my decision to add a tip jar, despite some anxiety about asking people for money in any sort of way, even something as non-pushy and optional as a little button in the sidebar.
I feel it's only fair, if I'm asking people to open their wallets, to let them know a bit about where I'm coming from. I live with my parents, sister, and several fuzzy family members. We're a lower-middle-class family, and while there's not much extra money around, we're not and nor have we ever been in a position where we couldn't afford basic necessities like food and healthcare.
I do not currently have any sort of regular income. While I'm supported by my parents in terms of food and housing, things are very tight for me when it comes to other things. What any money I receive will likely be used for is: public transit; travel (including travel for the sake of travel, visiting friends, and going to unschooling conferences and gatherings); and contributing to groceries and similar for my family, because it very much bothers me that I'm not currently contributing monetarily to the general family funds.
Right now, and for the next several months, any donations will help me to be able to focus all my time on finishing writing, editing, and publishing my unschooling book.
Finally, whether you're able to or choose to donate or not, I want to thank everyone who reads this blog for supporting me through your words of encouragement and support, sharing and spreading what I have to share on this blog, and just being the wonderful people you are. I'm incredibly grateful!
And if you do donate monetarily? Just, seriously, thank you SO MUCH for your generosity. Know that it is very greatly appreciated!!
