As an unschooling parent it has taken me years to quieten the 'evaluative gaze' I had internalised from my own schooled upbringing. Like you, I am not sure we can ever fully escape it but I feel I am gradually making progress in letting go of expectations and focussing on what brings connection and joy in each moment. I am interested too, though, in how we can ensure that the validity of in unschooling and self-directed learning is increasingly recognised and supported. Recently I have even wondered about doing some research in this area....but your article has made me wonder about how this could be achieved without, however inadvertently, buying into the 'evaluative gaze'.
